Cross-referencing is the art of turning a competitor SKU into an Oregon equivalent — in 10 seconds, at the counter. The customer isn't loyal to the brand; they want 'the same one' better or cheaper. Your move.
Decoding Stihl
Stihl nomenclature encodes pitch + gauge in the first 2 digits. The RS suffix = Rapid Super (full chisel), RM = Rapid Micro (semi-chisel). The trailing digits = drive links. Example: 26 RS 81 = .325" / .063" / full chisel / 81 DL → Oregon equivalent SpeedCut or ControlCut in .325" .063" 81 DL.
Decoding Husqvarna
Husqvarna chains are prefixed H + numeric code. Example: H42 84DL = 3/8" / .058" / 84 drive links → Oregon equivalent 73DPX (semi-chisel) or 73LGX (full chisel).
When the code isn't recognized — fallback protocol
If the SKU is exotic (private-label chain, secondary brand), fall back on the basics. With these 3 pieces of info, you can find the Oregon equivalent in the spec table:
- Read pitch (stamped on drive link)
- Read gauge (stamped on drive link)
- Count the drive links
